I’m a resident at the Monastic Academy. We’re an experiment trying to build a contemplative tradition that makes sense in the modern world: not rejecting it, not running away from it, but working right within it to make it less destructive and more beneficial, with the knowledge that the stakes are unreasonably high and we don’t have much time.
My name is Jōshin (成真). 成 is the final “jō” in the Four Great Vows. It means something like attain, fulfill, or become. 真 means something like truth, authenticity, or reality. I received this name in a lay ordination ceremony on April 1, 2018.
